Aluminum Hydroxide ATH Flame Retardant | Al(OH)3 99.5% | Surface Treated

Aluminum hydroxide (ATH) flame retardant filler with high purity, fine particle size and optional surface treatment. Endothermic decomposition releases water and forms a ceramic char, suppressing smoke and flame. Used in cables, rubber, plastics, coatings and composite panels for halogen-free flame retardancy. Grades suit many processes.

Description

Aluminum hydroxide, also known as ATH, is the world’s most widely used halogen-free flame retardant and smoke suppressant. When heated above approximately 180-220 degrees Celsius, it decomposes endothermically, absorbing heat, releasing water vapor that dilutes combustible gases, and leaving behind a thermally insulating alumina char that shields the underlying material from flame.

Our ATH grades are produced from high-purity feedstock with a minimum Al(OH)3 content of 99.5%, and are available in a range of particle sizes from coarse granules to fine grades with median particle sizes below 2 micrometers. Fine, narrowly distributed particles disperse uniformly in polymer matrices, preserving mechanical strength while achieving efficient flame retardancy at moderate loading levels.

For applications requiring higher processing temperatures or improved compatibility, surface-treated grades are offered using coupling agents that enhance filler-polymer adhesion, reduce viscosity and improve moisture resistance. This makes ATH suitable for flame-retardant cables, wire insulation, conveyor belts, rubber seals, FRP composites, wall panels and intumescent coatings.

ATH is non-toxic, produces low smoke and corrosive-gas emission, and contains no halogens, aligning with modern environmental and safety standards. It also serves as an effective smoke suppressant in combination with other fillers.

Every lot is tested for purity, median particle size, specific surface area and free moisture, and results are documented in the certificate of analysis. With a broad portfolio of grades and a responsive application support team, our ATH helps compounders and converters meet stringent fire-safety and environmental requirements without sacrificing processing efficiency or end-product quality.
