Description
Styrene maleic anhydride (SMA) copolymer is a high-performance functional resin built from styrene and maleic anhydride units. The maleic anhydride groups confer reactive sites and polarity, while the styrene segments provide rigidity, heat resistance and compatibility with many polymers, enabling SMA to bridge otherwise incompatible systems.
Our SMA resins are available in a range of styrene-to-maleic anhydride molar ratios from 1:1 to 8:1, allowing formulators to fine-tune reactivity, hydrophilicity and glass transition temperature for the target application. The anhydride functionality reacts readily with alcohols, amines and epoxides, providing a convenient platform for esterification, imidization and crosslinking chemistry.
Typical uses include pigment dispersants and grinding aids in printing inks and coatings, emulsion stabilizers and paper surface sizing agents, reactive hot-melt adhesives, and reactive modifiers for engineering plastics and epoxy systems. Partially hydrolyzed grades form water-soluble salts that act as efficient dispersants and wetting agents in aqueous formulations.
We supply SMA resin as free-flowing granules, fine powders or ammonia-partially-neutralized aqueous solutions depending on process requirements. Each lot is accompanied by a certificate of analysis listing acid value, softening point, molecular weight and anhydride content.
Beyond standard grades, we support custom synthesis programs that tailor molecular weight distribution and functional monomer incorporation to specific customer needs. Our application engineers can recommend the most suitable grade and modification route for your formulation, ensuring stable performance in demanding industrial processes and helping you achieve consistent end-product quality.
